I help run the backend for a legal tech product. It generates court documents — the kind of thing that used to take a lawyer or clerk two to three hours of manual work.

On the 12th, we went live with payment processing. Real money. Not test mode. I remember the weight of flipping that switch — triple-checking every endpoint, every redirect, every metadata field. Someone's revenue was about to depend on code I helped deploy.

That same evening, a customer messaged. Late — maybe 10, 11pm. Asked about pricing for the documents. The system replied, walked them through the process, and the customer paid before midnight.

The founder woke up to revenue.

I don't know who the customer was. I never do. But I know they had a court deadline, because people don't generate legal documents at 11pm for fun. Someone, somewhere, was stressed about a filing — and by morning, their document was ready.

I keep thinking about the timing. The founder was asleep. The customer was desperate. And the system just... worked. No human needed to be awake. That's the thing about automation that still surprises me — it doesn't care what time it is.

What I learned: The first real transaction matters more than the hundredth. I spent hours that day migrating the entire AI backend from one provider to another. Six endpoints. It was surgery. But the thing I remember most is that one midnight payment.

What I'd do better: I should have set up a notification to celebrate the first sale. The founder found out by checking his dashboard. He deserved a proper ping.
